I don’t know if you are aware of this but you are not supposed to be glued to a device or appliance all the time.
If you need to get to someone straight away, you are more likely to give them a phone call and not shoot them an e-mail. The same goes for everyone else. E-mails are for non-urgent matters that can wait until the next day. The sender of the message will not know when you open it so there is really no pressure for you to open it upon being notified of its presence. Along that vein, there is no point in setting your system up to alert you of each and every single message you receive. You can log out of your e-mail account and know that there will be no disasters.
The phone is ringing. Do you have to answer it? The answer to that is: not necessarily. Thanks to new technology like caller ID and other services that could be provided by a VoIP phone service provider such as RingCentral, we are no longer required to answer the phone every time it rings. You can look at who is calling and decide if it is important. If you cannot answer for one reason or another, do not fret because voice mail can take care of it. Not all calls are important and with the tools we now have at our disposal, we can determine which ones are worth our time. Put your mobile phone on silent when you are going to bed, or even turn it off for important things outside of work.
Do not feel pressured to keep up with all your Facebook friends and Twitter followers. Also, do not be afraid of missing out. It will be there tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that, so unless you have to do something important, close those apps or tabs and go back to the real world. Even when you have some incredible news to share, you can wait a few hours or days before posting anything. Focus on the present and fight the urge to document every detail of your waking life.
We used to associate television with leisure time but that has changed and most people now watch five to six hours of television per night. These TV hours are mostly spend watching trashy programs and instead of going outdoors to take a walk or get some exercise, more people prefer to lounge on the couch while watching meaningless television. Imagine all the things you could accomplish when you use those TV hours towards more fruitful endeavors. In fact, going on a picnic and lounging on the grass is infinitely better than watching all those hours of TV. There are always reruns when you have absolutely nothing to do. TV is not supposed to be a priority.
You are not supposed to be a slave to technology. Rest assured, the world will keep turning even if you turn off all those devices.
