Alfa Romeo has always been known for its exotic looks and competent handling. This Italian brand has now created another masterpiece which will stack up with the likes of Jaguar F-Pace, Audi Q5 and to name a few – The Alfa Romeo Stelvio. Named after a treacherous mountain pass in Italy, the new 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a compact luxury performance vehicle that puts the ‘sport’ in ‘sport-utility vehicle.’
A 2.0-liter I-4 turbo rated for 280-hp & 306 lb.-ft of torque is something that will put a BMW or Audi to shame. Power delivery is quick & flat torque curve helps this SUV achieve 0-60 time of 5.4 Secs, faster than any SUV in its class. The ice on the cake is the ZF sourced 8-speed automatic which is into its own in the Dynamic drive mode.
If you want to have an exhilarating drive, Quadrifoglio got your back. Quadrifoglio is the performance division of Alfa Romeo, just like the BMW’s M-Division, or to be precise, the Land Rover’s SV division. They have fitted a 2.9-liter twin turbo V6 mated to 8-speed automatic churning 505-hp with 443 lb.-ft of torque & capable of doing 0-60 in 3.6 secs. They have achieved a staggering 7:51.7 lap time in Nürburgring.
Exceptionally precise & responsive steering is something we haven’t experienced in most of today’s SUV. It tells the driver what is going through the front wheels and the feedback from it is classy. This is a car is not only fast in the straight line but also cut corners superbly. It is the most agile and enjoyable vehicle in its category.
Alfa Romeo cannot go wrong with the exteriors, and Stelvio is no exception. It looks stunning from every possible angle. It is identical to Giulia but the design looks more natural on the SUV.
The profile looks improved than the Giulia’s. It’s perfect looking shape sets it apart from the aggressive angular design which is offered by brands like Lexus. A sloping down roof is neatly integrated to the marvelously styled rear hatch with the rear bumper encapsulating launcher-like exhaust giving following drivers a good idea of the Stelvio’s performance potential.
The flamboyance of the exterior is not something which has been carried into the SUV. The cabin makes you feel a little nostalgic as the interior has been designed using cheaper parts if you compare them with the competition. However, they are excellent to use. There is a start/stop button on the flat-bottom steering wheel which looks purposeful and feels very easy to use. Behind the steering, there are two metal paddle shifters which are the focal point of the Sport trim.
Seats wear all leather as standard but Ti gets upgraded hides and Sport package adds huge side bolstering. Real wood and aluminum have been used for the dashboard to keep the plastic at minimal.
The dashboard of the Stelvio consists of a 7.0-inch touch screen with nice looking graphics but the apple car play and android auto will show up later this year. There is also a dial marked as DNA which is actually the drive mode dial, which stands for D = Dynamic, N = Natural & A = All-weather.
Neither NHTSA nor the IIHS has crash test the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio yet, so we aren’t sure what rating it will get.
Active safety features like forward-collision warnings, auto emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings, and blind spot monitoring are the features which comes with optional packages. Rear-view camera with parking sensors is standard across variants.
2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio price starts at $40,000 & this SUV has many competitors but none can match up the performance of Stelvio. While the Alfa Romeo brand seeks to erase its reputation for poor reliability, the Stelvio’s unproven powertrain and questionable build quality remain a gamble. Still, the Italian crossover has impressive standard features and outstanding performance that put esteemed rivals a run for their money. Elegant and swift, the Stelvio is exceptionally pleasing to look at and—more important to us—to drive.
