Smart Phones of today are very powerful thus versatile. They are capable in doing lot of things you cannot even think of, But to utilize those feature you must update yourself to know about new technologies being adopted onto these small devices lately. Using Pen Drive on phone is one of them. Although this feature was introduced in this early decade, it is getting popularity now as this is being implemented to cheaper phones and also made available as a third party application for those phones which doesn’t has this feature in the core operating system.

What is USB – OTG?

USB – OTG is expanded as USB On The Go and is a feature used to connect USB peripherals to phone using a converter. Check this for more info on OTG -> What is USB OTG?

How to connect pen-drive to phone with it?

All you need is :

  • Hardware – (Cable)
  • Compatible OTG Software

Hardware (OTG Cable):  otg cable

You must buy OTG cable from the market to use this feature. There are lot of vendors selling them for as low as 2$ (Rs. 100) online. Although branded companies like Sandisk are selling them at higher rates (20$/Rs.1000) you can search for some cheaper ones.

They are sold by lot of different names, some of them are:

  • OTG Cable
  • MicroUSB OTG Cable
  • Flash Drive adapter for Phone
  • MicroUSB Adapter
  • Pendrive adapter for phone

Search on Amazon or Ebay with any of the above keyword to buy one for yourself.  This cable has two ends , One end is male micro USB which is connected to your charging port and the other one is a female standard size USB adapter to which you can plug in your flash drive to.

Compatible OTG Software:

Most of the phones today has this feature in the core operating system if the phone itself. You can always search online to know if your phone supports USB OTG to know it. So just by connecting the hardware you can see the pendrive being detected on your phone as an external device. If you see no response from your phone when you connect the cable and flash drive into it you must check out the below section.

What is my phone doesn’t support OTG?

If your phone doesn’t support OTG, Don’t worry, you can install external applications  to fix this.

Basically for this to work You must have two software, One to mount your OTG connection and the other to browse files on the drive.

As an explorer we prefer using ES File Explorer and to mount it use StickMount.

  1. Install these two software
  2. Connect the OTG cable to phone and flash drive
  3. Open StickMount app and click OK to mount the device
  4. Now open explorer and browse to home directory to open your pendrive
  5. You can also make the stickmount auto-launch as soon as u plug in the cable from settings
