Human Computer Interaction (HCI) deals with the study of interaction between computers and people. Such interaction mainly takes place at the user interface. Due to the quick developments taking place in the field of digital technology, the operation of HCI is turning out to be more and more complex.
Issues with Designing Interactive Computing System for Human Use
One of the main problems faced by professionals in the field of HCI is to design the interactive computing system for human use. The basic goal of HCI designers is to make computers to be more receptive and usable to the needs of users. To give the best possible interface in specified constraints, HCI designers are believed to develop systems that reduce the barrier between the individual’s cognitive model of what users want to accomplish and the computer’s comprehension of the user task.
Interaction between the computers and users totally depends upon the user interface, including both software and hardware. Interaction design implies designing interactive products for supporting people in their day-to-day lives. Since HCI involves a machine and a human in conjunction with one another, designing a user interface needs knowledge about the machine and human inside.
On one side, info about graphic disciplines, communication theory, cognitive psychology, social sciences are needed; on the other hand, techniques in operating systems, programming languages, and computer graphics are required.
Going the Mobile Way
Mobile devices have a very important role in today’s modern society. People belonging to all walks of life use such devices for many purposes. They are seen in almost every field of education, medicine, entertainment, military systems, communication services, and so on. Designing a good user interface for a mobile device has many interaction challenges associated with it due to its multidisciplinary nature. Few of these challenges are related to software, while the others are related to hardware.
HCI Design Challenges for Mobile Devices
There are several computer-human interaction challenges in designing user interfaces for mobile devices. Owing to the restrictions of weight and size for portability reasons, the interface design for mobile devices faces more hardware challenges than the other regular-sized devices like printers or desktop phones.
These challenges include restricted input facilities, restricted output facilities, and designing for mobility.
Portability is the main center of design to meet the needs of mobility. Thus, miniaturization of hardware appears to be the trend for the future advancement in HCI for mobile devices.
But, we are yet to witness a strong growth in the research areas in HCI, so as to develop a fully functional model that can bring about a convincing human computer interaction in near future.
Looking at the way things have been progressing, it’s a no-brainer to expect lot of developments in the field of mechatronics, robotics, and HCI over the next couple of years, and it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the way in which, machines interact with human beings at the moment, would change dramatically by the end of this decade!
